the tn-lcd driven by a simple multiplexing method has seen many applications as a flat panel display due to its advantages of low cost, low power consumption and compact dimensions. however, its visibility at high-level multiplexing above 640*200 pixels limits its practical uses. the sbe-lcd can provide good image quality with a multiplexing level twice as high as a tn-lcd, but difficulties in mass production have kept it from being utilized. the studies of the materials that constitute an sbe-lcd and the search for the optimum conditions that would enable efficient sbe-lcd mass production are detailed. the rubbing method for surface treatment, previously considered not applicable, was successfully perfected, opening up the way to mass production
