superficial incorporation of one or several species into a metallic material can be achieved by laser melting the surface of the material which has previously been covered with a coating of the alloying element(s). the alloying process involves heat transport and matter transport. simple calculations of the heat effect of the beam are easy to perform, but it is shown that accurate results are only obtained when the properties of all the phases present are taken into account. the homogeneity of the surface alloy obtained can be predicted using a dimensionless parameter which connects the operating conditions and the physicochemical properties of the coating materials. another approach consisting in the calculation of the initial acceleration of the melted material is also proposed all these approaches lead to an understanding of the laser alloying process and to the fabrication of good quality coatings resistant to high temperature degradation
