a monolithically integrated multibiosensor has been realized using sos/fet (silicon-on-sapphire/field-effect transistor) technology, which makes it possible to measure a very small sample the multibiosensor detects urea, glucose and potassium ions at the same time by using an sos/isfet (silicon-on-sapphire/ion-sensitive field-effect transistor). source follower circuits consisting of four pairs of isfets and mosfets, which are fabricated on one chip, make it possible to measure isfet surface potential changes by the changes in the output of the isfet sources. differential outputs between two isfets, one sensitive to a detected substance and the other insensitive, are measured using a gold layer, deposited on the sapphire back surface, as a reference electrode. a minute amount of enzyme or ionophore is used for the substance-sensitive membrane: 0.03 u urease, 0.07 u glucose oxidase and 3*10/sup -4/ mg valinomycin are used on one chip
