a simple general spectral tuning technique is suggested and shown experimentally to be feasible. the technique, appropriate for shallow junction surface-emitting gaas leds, is repeatable, controllable, reversible, and appears to be completely non-destructive. the tuning capability makes it possible to increase system bandwidth in optical fiber communication by operating at wavelengths at which there is less fiber material dispersion. this technique also increases greatly the number of source wavelengths that can be used in wavelength multiplexing schemes. the basis for this technique is changes in semiconductor surface charge produced by changes in gaseous environment. in particular, external gas pressure reduction leads to desorption of surface impurities
