three types of solar cells were fabricated' n/sup +/-p cells and high efficiency n/sup +/-p-p/sup +/ and p/sup +/-n-n/sup +/ back-surface field cells. the only variable parameter with the surface condition on the emitter side' either the surface treatment after metallization of the front (emitter surface) metal coverage factor alpha. the influence of these surface conditions on the saturation current i/sub 0/ and hence on v/sub oc/ was determined it was concluded that in the back-surface field cells the saturation current density j/sub 0/ due to the injection of minority carriers into the emitter was of the same order of magnitude as the bulk injection component. it was also concluded that the emitter is transparent to minority carriers
