glass fabrics, vacuum impregnated with epoxy resin, are insulation materials with excellent behaviour under mechanical stress. films of organic materials such as kapton can ameliorate the dielectric properties of this insulation. a large number of samples with different surface treatments and insulation compositions were tested in order to obtain a wider knowledge of mechanical properties including long term behaviour. results of beam bending test samples, which correspond most closely to the stresses arising in large coils are presented. winding techniques are discussed with special attention to wedge-shaped and d-shaped toroidal field coils and poloidal field coils
