temporary solder masking, or solder stopping prior to printed circuit board (pcb) soldering, has come a long way from the days of tape and toothpicks. masking agents are now available in the variety of viscosities necessary for manual, robotic, and silkscreening processes, and in solvent soluble, water soluble, and peelable forms to eliminate tedious and costly application and removal. whether evaluating solvent soluble, water soluble, or peelable masking agents, it is necessary for the engineer to understand the basic chemistry of successful masking candidates, as well as the advantages and disadvantages present in each. sometimes the very constituents of these formulations that make them so easy to apply and remove cause unexpected problems elsewhere during production any critical evaluation of solder masks should include the eight points listed in the table
