the authors consider the design and performance of the read/write head for an ibm type 3480 magnetic tape drive. dimensions have been reduced and track density increased to 18 tracks on a half-inch tape. the flux detector consists of an 81 percent nickel 19 percent iron magnetoresistive element with titanium pre-magnetisation bars and aluminium oxide spacers. the output is calculated, and experiments gave a figure of 3 millivolts. data is packed at 972 flux reversals per millimeter, with a tape speed of 2 meters/second. the write-head uses a printed circuit winding factors contributing to noise are listed, and a signal-to-noise ratio of 24 db is reported
