the efficiency of an automatic insertion machine depends on the quality of its programs. as boards become more complex, the ability of a human operator to generate a satisfactory program diminishes rapidly since it becomes impossible to predict events more than a few steps ahead. computer aided programming is the obvious step but many interacting parameters must be considered if a truly optimised program is to be generated
