a new double-minimum state, (2)/sup 1/sigma/sub u//sup +/, of na/sub 2/ has been characterized by infrared fluorescence recorded at high resolution by fourier-transform spectrometry. a ring dye laser populates /sup 1/sigma/sub g//sup +/ rydberg levels in the two-photon process /sup 1/sigma/sub g//sup +/=a/sup 1/sigma/sub u//sup +/=x/sup 1/sigma/sub g//sup +/, and /sup 1/sigma/sub g//sup +/=(2)/sup 1/sigma/sub u//sup +/ fluorescence is analyzed. the two potential minima lie at 28454.6 cm/sup -1/, 3.688 aa, and 27870.4 cm/sup -1/, 6.739 aa, respectively, and the energy at the top of the barrier is about 29150 cm/sup -1/ (relative to the minimum in x/sup 1/sigma/sub g//sup +/)
