the use for the first time of a high-resolution fourier transform spectrometer to analyse the laser-induced fluorescence from a ring dye laser allows observation of vibrational levels of the /sup 7/li/sub 2/ molecule close to the ground-state dissociation limit. this extends the known potential curve from 5.18 aa (88percent of the dissociation energy d/sub e/) to 8.51 aa (99.7percent of d/sub e/). long-range parameters are d/sub e/=8516.9 +or- 0.5 cm/sup -1/, c/sub 6/=(2.4 +or- 0.5)*10/sup 6/ aa/sup 6/ cm/sup -1/, upsilon/sub d/=40.3 +or- 0.3. from single or double resonance excitation the technique will allow the precise observation of the full potential curve of a number of electronic states
