waste paper is dry-ground in the refiner and wetted with water in a mixer. the quantity of water suffices to bind the gypsum which is added later, yet is small enough to avoid that excess water escapes the plate as it is pressed. the addition of starch dissolved in the mixing water improves the homogeneity and the mechanical properties of plates. higher fiber contents also improve the mechanical properties but decreases the fire resistance of plates. gross weights of ca. 1.2 g/cm (3) may provide flexural strengths above 20 n/mm (2) . the fine grain of flue gas desulfurization gypsum, gypsum from brown-coal-fired furnaces inclusive, gives plates with excellent mechanical properties. plate surface treatments with k sub 2 co sub 3 effect an additional improvement in the mechanical properties (orig.).
