the principles of electro chemical machining (ecm), which is based on the anodic dissolution of the material to be machined, are recalled. the procedure is similar to electropolishing and electrofettling. the piece to be machined forms the anode whilst the cathode is the tool which defines the geometry of the shape to be produced. the fundamental laws of ecm are given together with the choice of electrolyte and the electrochemical reactions taking place at the anode and cathode. an example of the application of ecm is given. reasons for the choice of ecm as opposed to another fabrication procedure are given
