the goal of this project, a rigorous side by side comparison of sensitivity of the 1992 version of evanescent wave (ew) technology with elisa, has been achieved. we conclude that sensitivity is the same for both systems when surface binding chemistries are equal during the second half of the effort we have focussed on-improving surface binding chemistry for the evanescent wave system, improving the waveguides themselves, and improving of the instrumentation to allow efficient generation of the data needed for the comparison overall our conclusion is that the evanescent wave technology has the potential to provide sensitivity equal to or greater than elisa in a rapid, user friendly, portable system. the current sensitivity of the ew technology is limited by the chemistry, not the instrument sensitivity. therefore, further work focussing on the binding chemistries will be required to fully realize the potential of the ew technology
