A number of vegetable fibers are growing in popularity as designers and manufacturers become more interested in marketing environmentally friendly products. Ramie blended with cotton is appearing in knit and woven women's wear fabrics. Fiber from cultivated banana is popular with fashion designers, but uneconomical extraction thchniques are limiting market growth Pineapple has appeared in fashion items as a form of rough linen that takes weeks to weave. Its wider use has been helped by the development of an environmentally friendly method of extracting the fiber from the plant. Coir, produced from coconut husks, and jute are being used increasingly in mats and carpeting.
