Polyester is the most widely used manmade fiber in the world. Initially hailed as a miracle fiber, it became ridiculed as the epitome of sartorial sleaze. Today, in microfiber form, it profilerates in the collections of designers worldwide. To improve its negative image as a fiber of the middle class, the Manmade Fiber Producers Association adopted a new name, the Polyester Fashion Council (PFC), and successfully promoted th fiber's image as a fashion fiber. In a recent appearance on CBS Morning News, Mary McFadden gave the fiber yet another fashion boost by exhibiting her collection of 100 percent polyester apparel alongside all silk apparel. CBS interviewers could not distinguish the difference between the two collections.
