Polyester/cotton blends rank as the major commodity fabrics. Their prices are dtermined more by commercial factors than by intrinsic worth. Hence, the most cost effective finishing methods must be employed. Dedicated continuous production with the optimum throughput is the best system. Optimum throughput is 30 million linear meters, based on 7,200 operating hours per year. The fabric should be prepared by removing sizes, fats, waxes, proteins, residual weaving oils, and cotton seeds, and by bleaching the inherent color from the cotton. The fabric shuld be mercerized, then heat treated in a tenter oven. Disperse vat or disperse reactive dyeing on a continuous range is, in the long run, more cost effective than either continuous pad range or tenter dyeing of resin bonded pigments. Usually, finsihing can be confined to one pass, and shrinkage can be controlled by longitudinal compression on a rubber belt machine. The achieve optimum results, one must extend such effective tenter techniques to preprocessing and postprocessing, and emphasize control of the operation instead of control by the operator.
