As a result of its recent two year modernization program, Sara Lee Knit Products has more than doubled the knitting capacity of its North Carolina plant from 375,000 to 775,000 pounds of knit fabtics per week. Sara Lee also expanded its dyeing capacity with a new dyehouse control room featuring a semiautomated chemical dispensing system and low liquor ratio dyeing machines from Gaston County and Scholl America. Sara Lee has replaced its conventional die cutting system with more verastile automated cutting systems, including five Lectra Systems E-96 high ply machines used in conjunction with tubular spreading machines from Gerber Garment Technology. The North Carolina plant, which is located in a city, is currently working to quadruple its water treatment capabilities.
