Benedikt Maser Textile Company experienced recurring problems with streaks on its dyed, tubular, cotton knit fabrics. A comprehensive investigation by the dyeing and knitting departments sought to identify the causes of these streaks and recommend a remedy. The manufacturer of Benedikt's winding machines assumed that different moisture levels in the yarn layers caused different frictional values. Frictional variations, in turn, caused variations in stitching that were revealed as streaks of uneven color in the dyed product. Steps taken to reduce the variation in yarn waxing and to stabilize the yarn's moisture content resulted in fewer variations in cotton swelling and significantly reduced the streakiness of dyed fabrics.
