Researchers have developed a new spring loaded tensioning system to reduce the large tension variations that occur within a knitting cycle of compound needle and bearded needle warp knitting machines. Because conventional spring tensioning systems do not impart uniform tension to the yarns throughout the knitting cycle, they can increase yarn breakage and machine stoppage. The new system improves machine productivity and expands patterning potential without requiring a fully controlled expensive letoff mechanism. It offers key advantages over conventional systems, including a 30 percent reduction in peak yarns without risking excessive yarn breakage, and greater knitting machine velocities. Because it is a passive device, the new tensioning device is suitable for all high speed warp knitting machines. 6 refs.
