A research project at the Scottish College of Textiles is using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to identify and characterize lubricants for use during woolen fabric production. The researchers have used an amino bonded column to separate nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEO) and linear alcohol ethoxylates (LAEO) into their oligomers. Normal phase HPLC using a nitrile column accurately determined mineral oil and groundnut oil constituents. Reverse phase HPLC using a nitrile column accurately determined mineral oil and groundnut oil constituents. Reverse phase HPLC successfully analyzed oleic acid and methyl oleate. Researchers have also indentified methods to extract lubricants from wool and devised procedures for cleaning up wool grease from the extracts. Funding for this research comes from the SOED.
