Hand knotted Indian carpets are medium to high quality commodities. Acrylic fiber already produced in India, is available for use in tufted carpet production. Acrylic fiber produced for use by the Indian carpet manufacturing sector requires modifications, including alteration of the fiber cross section geometry, a higher modulus, production of high twisted heat set yarns, the application of finishes to the acrylic fiber, use of dope dyeing, fiber blend compatibility, and the use of environmentally friendly dye processes. A cost benefit analysis using a 15 denier regular and 5 denier high shrink acrylic fiber blend in a 70/30 ratio computes a cost of 285 rupees per kilogram of carpet. Whereas this cost exceeds the cost of producing both blend and Indian wool carpet, the global trend toward synthetic fiber carpets indicates the economic feasibility of acrylic fiber carpet production.
