Polyester microfibers are defined as those fibers having a yarn count below 1.0 dtex. Microfibers may contain four times as many filaments as conventional fibers. Therefore, they will have more surface area and greater buik. These properties impart a soft full hand with superb drape and comfort to microfiber fabrics. Polyester microfibers will have the greatest impact in apparel markets, but will also be used in technical fabrics and home furnishings. Procedures for finishing polyester microfibers, including pretreatment, drying, heat-setting, emerizing, dyeing, and finishing, are described. Recommendations for dyeing polyester microfibers in jet dyeing machines with overflow units are offered. 5 refs.
