Changes in yarn type or variations in yarn quality parameters, such as average yarn count, twist, and raw material, can result in significant variations in the density of courses and wales in relaxed cotton circular knit fabrics and 5 percent shrinkage in fabrics and apparel. Knitting mills working with different suppliers should evaluate each yarn in terms of its compatibility with fabric specifications. To ensure consistency of yarn and fabric quality, knitting mills should also monitor incoming yarn properties and refer to the Reference Courses and Wales for dyed and finished fabrics. The Reference State of Relaxation provides desired course and wale densities. 19 refs.
