Environmental safety in textile products has become increasingly important during the last ten years, considered by a significant number of consumers to be as critical as price, quality, and design. Novotex A/S, an apparel manufacturer in Denmark, developed a method to evaluate the life cycle of its products to improve their environmental safety. Until 1992, the company applied best available technology and best environmental practice strategies in this evaluation. After that time, the company implemented a new program titled the Eco-Management and Audit System. The application of this program to the manufacture of green cotton T-shirts illustrates its general principles.
