An understanding of the technological aspects of the Indian hand loom industry helps evaluate the market potential of its fabrics for export. Hand loom weaving uses no electrical power. Yarns are either hand spun or mill spun. The looms include sley motion and treadle types. Characteristics of hand loom fabrics include more apparent visible defects, uneven piece lengths, and uneven selvages. Hand loom fabrics may contain multicolored or different yarns in the same pick, tie and dye yarns, and unlimited fabric designs or colors. Fabric inspections for washing performance and major, minor, and serious flaws enforce textile classficiation. Major unavoidable flaws that appear on the backside of apparel are ignored. Excessive minor flaws rendering fabric appearance shoddy lead to rejection.
