The Whole Garment knitting machines developed by the Japanese company Shima Seiki Mig Ltd are presented. The Whole Garment technique is based on the production of articles in tubular jersey without seams on a flat-bed knitting machine based on a technique of dividing, knitting and reassembling the stitches. For sweater with sleeves it is necessary to make three separate tubes for the body and the sleeves. They are then joined together at the armhole level and the sweater is finished off with a tubular yoke. Thus the entire garment is constructed without seams. The time reguired to make a ribbed long-sleeved sweater is 23-50 mins. The SWG-V (Shima Whole Garment) two needle bed and the SWG-X four needle bed machines are described.
