A three-dimensional weaving process has been developed by a team of industrial and academic researchers in Germany. The process called 3D rotational weaving allows the yarn to be woven in three dimensional patterns for the first time ever. This development would mean that yarns could be placed in directions suitable for reinforcing composites intended for specific applications. A further advantage is that the machinery does not have to be switched off when the user wishes to change the profile's cross section. This technique holds great promise for the manufacturers of semi-finished products intended for the aerosopace and automotive industries.
