The selection of automotive fabrics and the influences on automotive interior design are discussed. Traditionally, automobile manufacturers have been conservative and perhaps too cautious in their selection of interior fabrics, in large measure because of their insistence on durability over styling. Automotive fabrics are tested for tearing, pilling, raveling, seam strength, flammability, and stain resistance, among other things. For instance, auto makers have shied away from some of the bright colors now in vogue due to the poor lightfastness of vibrant colors. Today, however, auto makers are attempting to identify long term fabric and design trends, as well as taking an active role in the development of automotive fabrics.
