Selection of needles in weft knit patterning occurs via direct needle control or indirect needle control and electronic control. Jacquard control systems enable free selection and guidance of more than four needles into working positions. Direct needle control occurs via cam parts or pattern wheels that act on pattern/knitting butts. One or more control sinkers/pins arranged after the needle in the same groove of the needle carrier provide indirect needle control. The principal needle selection methods include swing cam, split cam, multicam track, pattern wheel, battery selector, pattern drum, mono film, revolving cam boxes, and electronically controlled jacquard. Control selection via film tapes or magnets is a form of electronic control.
