A review of fabric design addresses the four basic design techniques, including symbolic, verbal, diagrammatic, and graphic; the differences between warp and weft; the five basic weaving motions and their functions; and key terminology. Diagrams illustrate loom components involved in warp delivery, weft insertion, and fabric removal; shedding motions; the effects of lifting and entering order on the final weave; control of warp density; weft selection and insertion; common reference points in the weave; symbols and organization of drawing-in drafts, reed plans, chain drafts, and weaves; and layouts for plain weaves, 2/2 warp rib, 2/2 filling rib, 2/2 basket weave, and 2/2 twills.
