The raw material for Mosi, a traditional Korean ramie fabric produced in Hansan, is the perennial plant Boehmeria nivea L. An introduction to Mosi fabrics highlights plant cultivation, fiber preparation and spinning, warping, sizing, weft preparation, weaving, markets, and fabric properties. Because the fabric cannot be exposed under dry conditions, Mosi fabrics are sold in the early morning only. Hansan Mosi fabrics feature a double S false twist at the joined ends and require no twisting. Although the traditional Mosi market in Hansan is a vital supplier of raw materials to yarn manufacturers, trade has declined due to the continuous import of ramie products from the People's Republic of China. 9 refs.
