The subjectively perceived roughness of textiles was found to be related to construction parameters. Single nylon filaments of 75 and 150 micrometers and a plain weave fabric were subjectively evaluated for roughness by 14 men and 16 women. Perceived roughness was found to be correlated to the spacing of observed irregularities on the yarn or fabric surface. Yarns of various diameters were consequently evaluated to determine if roughness perceptions could bo correlated with practical textile parameters. The tests determined that the thickness of woven fabrics and the diameter of yarns could be correlated to subjective roughness evaluations. 7 refs.
