This article documents the technological developments of H. Stoll GmbHs' computer controlled flat-knitting machines, and further discusses their potential for a wider range of applications. In terms of knitwear, recent machinery has the ability to cope with complicated techniques such as colour jacquard, cable structures and intarsia, however the author has focused on the scope they provide for manufacturing technical textiles. Stoll's CMS range of flat-knitting machinery is multi functional, producing shaped garments; cutting; sewing; and processing a variety of materials, and are increasingly applied to technical applications. Elasticity is seen as the main advantage of technical knits, equaling low tensile strength and therefore higher absorption of energy.
