At ITMA 1999, all loom manufacturers presented selvage formation devices that reduce selvage waste. Picanol's ELSY electronically driven selvage device installs on the upper longitudinal tie bar in front of the first heddle frame on Gamma and Omniplus rapier looms with cam or dobby shed formation. Sulzer Ruti's Waste Saver device operates on rapier looms and has a novel weft end gripper that eliminates the need for an auxiliary selvage on the left side of the loom. Including warp and leno ends, this selvage formation method reduces selvage waste by 40 percent. The Selvedge Saver eliminates the need for left and right side auxiliary selvages during the weaving of heavy fabrics on projectile looms. End thread clamps grip the weft after each insertion, and extractor nozzles hold the yarn ends on either side to reduce weft waste by 35 percent. 6 refs.
