The narrow fabric needle loom was first patented in 1920, but was not used commercially until the 1950s. Needle looms use a weft insertion device instead of a shuttle to lay in a double weft on each pick. Electonic jacquard devices use computers to control the hooks. These computers allow looms to weave different designs in predetermined quantities for each style. Creels or beams feed the warp yarns to the loom. Calendering machines heat set and apply size to woven fabric tapes. Narrow fabric packages are spooled, blocked, festooned, and precut.
