The first warp knitting and circular knitting machines were introduced in 1775 and 1798, respectively. Latch needles for knitting machines were introduced in 1849. The development of the compound needle in 1856 increased the speed of warp knitting machines. The first flat bed knitting machine was developed in the United States in 1863. Jacquard and lace mechanisms were introduced in the 1880s. Interlock knitting machines emerged in 1910. Tape nip drives, reserve yarn systems, and storage feeders for jacquard machines emerged in the 1940s. Morat introduced electronic control of needle selection in 1963. Mayer & Cie introduced plain circular knitting machines with relative movement between needles and sinkers in 1987. Karl Mayer's introduction of microprocessor controlled piezo electric jacquard bars in 1995 permitted the knitting of fabric with densely patterned designs.
