Tests of an image processing system indicated that the system can measure fabric wrinkling using gray level distribution, ratio of surface area, and ratio of X and Y direction surface profiles. The system used overhead fluorescent illumination in a small dark room providing 756 Ix illumination on the horizontal surface of the tested fabric. Incident lighting angle varied from 40-85 degrees. The AATCC scale determined the wrinkle grade of the images captured perpendicular to the optical axis of the camera at a spatial resolution of 351x351 pixels in 256 shades of gray. The system performed well when the light angle was at least 70 degrees. 11 refs.
