Creation of 3-dimensional textile products is examined, with four main categories. The construction of products with one major dimension is reviewed with simple twisted ropes used if only axial tension if required. More complex profiles facilitating bending can be created by “tailor” technology with the most usual profiles illustrated. Two major dimensions are considered and the bending load discussed. A plate shape can be created with three or more layers (laminate) of suggested materials. Knitting techniques such as tubular knitting are discussed and there is an illustrated example. A two or multi-layered woven structure is included. Spatial products based on deformed flat fabrics forms the third category. The problems inherent here are explained and weft-knitting technology described. Calculation of the spatial products is explored. Fully spatial products using three yarn systems are reviewed and braiding technology can accommodate quite complex products with varying profiles.
