This touring exhibition, curated by John D Allen, gathered together British and Dutch knitters demonstrating wide-ranging interpretations of knitting and current trends. Varied materials, glass fiber, steel wire etc, and experimentation with technology have broadened the scope of knitting. Caroline McKenty’s hand-knitted chair of thick, industrial closed-cell polyethylene foam rod is described and illustrated. A tea service from Frances Geesin contrasts novel technical processes with familiar objects. Hand-knitted mild steel mesh using the single needle method is shown by Amanda Bright in forming a piece called “Oak”. A glamorous dress by Susie Freeman, “The Little Bright One”, has a multi-coloured skirt comprising little pockets enclosing sequins, ribbons and foils giving a carnival sparkle, and a plain black top-also illustrated. Brian Young has produced 100% pure Scottish lambswood patchwork throw and cushion covers to overcome domestic knitting machine limitations. The designs and colours are discussed.
