The ‘seamless apparel revolution’ is growing very rapidly with technological advances and moves into cotton infants and children’s wear-the small diameter machines also have an application for sleeves in adult garments. A comprehensive production infrastructure has already grown up around seamless construction with new yarn feed and tension devices and the incorporation of elastane yarns. The prospects for this advance in knitting technology are reviewed particularly in underwear. Notable machine builders include Still, Shima, Santoni, Rimach, APM and Mec-Mor. Placing machines in the textile and design departments of leading international colleges is stimulating the next generation of bright and talented textile/knitwear designers. Rich cash-generation fashion houses are also acquiring their own manufacturing interests, encouraging investment in R&D, design and new technologies. The machinery is in place and now a global campaign encompassing fashion, yarns design and development for many applications is under way, particularly in sportswear. Initiatives by Sangiacomo, Orizio and Trustfin are noted and the Whole Garment impetus summarized.
