Because of low yields in 1993, a projected ARP of 17.5 percent, and increased production costs due to insect infestation and increased insecticide costs, United States cotton growers are planning to reduce planted acreage in 1994 to 12,316,500 acres--down from 13.6 million acres in 1993> If the ARP is reduced, planted acreage estimates will rise. A 15 percent ARP could raise planted acreage to 12.7 million, and a 12.5 percent ARP could result in 13 million planted acres. A 569 pound per acre average yield in Mississippi was the worst in years. Insect control in that state, which averaged $104 per acre in 1992, is forecase at between $100 and $115 per acre in 1993. Arkansas growers estimate a 1993 crop reduction of 20 to 25 percent. Louisiana growers experienced reductions in yield of between 20 and 60 percent in 1993. More growers in North and South Carolina will be participating in flex programs in 1993. Cotton acreage projections for Texas, Arizonal, California also disussed.
