Malcolm Fleet, a research officer at the Turretfield Centre of the South australian Research and Development Institue, recently proposed to reduce the percentage of pigmented fibers in the Australian wool clip by genetic control. Fleet indentified three major characteristics of sheep that foreshadow the possible occurrence of brown or black fibers in the fleece: pigmented halo hairs on the back of the necks of lambs; igmented fibers near the horn buds of ewes, polled rams, and horned rams; and pigmented spots on the legs. Fleet recommended that wool growers cull sheep with these genetic indicators. Fleet plans to study albinism to identify the gene that produces black sheep.
