Du Pont has developed the Nomex Thermacolor aramid fiber, which is dyeable in yarn packages and used in the production of launderable, low shrinkage jacquard fabrics for aerospace applications. These fabrics are notable for their inherent fire resistant properties that exceed Federal Aviation Administration flammability and smoke standards. Other important properties are lightfastness, crockability, colorastness, abrasion resistance, and pilling resistance. These fabrics would replace the wool and wool blend fabrics currently used in airplane interior for upholstery and curtains. The wool and wool blend fabrics are inferior because drycleaning is required. Nomex Thermacolor is launderable at high temperatures without degrading its dimensional stability and other critical properties.
