The production of stitch-bonded fabrics, for earthwork stabilisation, from flax using maliwatt and Multiknit technology is described. Following an outline of the use of flax, hemp and jute fibres in stitch-bonding, examples are presented to single-layer and multilayer fabrics produced using both technologies. Enduses for these fabrics are outlined together with a review of the advantages that the vegetable fibres offer with respect to strength, biogradability and hygroscopy.
