Research on basalt fiber composite reinforcement for concrete performed a feasibility study on the use of rebars manufactured from braided basalt fiber strands as concrete reinforcement. Manufacture of the basalt fibers used a process developed in the Ukraine. Continuous basalt fibers with 9-15 micron diameters were optimal for rebar manufacture. The rebars consisted of approximately 80-90 percent fibers and an orgainc binder. Test results for mechanical properties (strength and modulus) appeared to establish the suitability of basalt composite rebars for use as concrete reinforcement.
