Dimethyldimethyloldihydroxylethyleneurea (DMDMDHEU) and pre-reacted dimethyldimethyloldihydroxylethyleneurea and acrylic acid (DMDMDHEU-AA) are used to study the specific rate constant and other activation parameters. At 100°C, the rate constants (k) for DMDMDHEU-AA crosslinking agents are higher than that for the DMDMDHEU, and those for the mole ratio of DMDMDHEU/AA = 1/2 are higher than the mole ratio of DMDMDHEU/AA = 1/1. The enthalpies and entropies of activation for DMDMDHEU are lower than for DMDMDHEU-AA. The carboxylic acid group of DMDMDHEU-AA does affect the reaction state and energy consumption in the reaction between cellulose molecules and crosslinking agents.
